When we talk about what separates Masters champions from the field, the conversation usually centres on putting, course management, or mental toughness. Rarely does anyone mention the physical attribute that underpins everything else: flexibility.
Yet when you look at the data, the connection between flexibility and elite golf performance is undeniable. At Oak Health Osteopathy in Cheadle Hulme, we see this first-hand with every golfer who walks through our door.
The Flexibility-Distance Connection
Research published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning found that trunk rotation flexibility was one of the strongest predictors of clubhead speed — more predictive than raw strength in many cases. Think about that. The ability to rotate freely through your thoracic spine contributes more to distance than how much you can bench press. This explains why slim, flexible players like Rory McIlroy can generate clubhead speeds that rival players who are significantly larger and more muscular.
Augusta Demands Flexibility
Augusta National rewards length, but it also demands precision. The course's undulating fairways, severe slopes around the greens, and the infamous Amen Corner require players to shape shots from awkward lies and stances. Every awkward lie demands additional range of motion from your body. A flexible golfer can maintain their swing mechanics from a sidehill lie. A stiff golfer compensates — and compensation is where injuries and errant shots begin.
The Flexibility Window
Here's something we discuss regularly with our patients in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport and Bramhall: flexibility is not fixed. It changes throughout your life, and — critically — it responds remarkably well to consistent training at any age. Research shows that a structured stretching programme of just 10–15 minutes daily can produce measurable improvements in range of motion within 4–6 weeks. This applies whether you're 25 or 65.
Where Most Golfers Are Tight
In our clinic, we consistently see the same restriction patterns in amateur golfers across Stockport, Bramhall, Gatley and Heald Green:
Thoracic spine rotation: The most common restriction. Often caused by prolonged sitting and poor posture. Directly limits your ability to make a full backswing without compensating through your lower back.
Hip internal and external rotation: Essential for loading into your trail hip on the backswing and clearing your lead hip in the downswing. Restricted hips are the hidden cause of countless knee and lower back injuries in golfers.
Shoulder flexibility: Particularly the lead shoulder, which must horizontally adduct across your chest during the backswing. Limited shoulder mobility leads to a shortened backswing or, worse, compensatory lumbar extension.
Hamstring flexibility: Tight hamstrings alter your pelvic tilt at address and throughout the swing, creating a cascade of compensations up the chain.
The Green Jacket Connection
Look at recent Masters champions: Scheffler, Rahm, Matsuyama, Johnson. All demonstrably flexible athletes who maintain their range of motion through dedicated physical preparation. The Green Jacket increasingly goes to players who treat their body as seriously as their swing.
Your Flexibility Game Plan
You don't need to be as flexible as a Tour pro. You need to be flexible enough for YOUR swing to function without causing damage to your body. That threshold is different for everyone.
