Common Causes of Back Pain and How Osteopathy Can Help

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people visit an osteopath, and it's estimated that around 80% of adults will experience it at some point in their lives. The good news is that most back pain is mechanical in nature — meaning it's caused by the way your muscles, joints and ligaments are working together, rather than by a serious underlying condition.

Poor posture is one of the biggest contributors to back pain, especially for those who spend long hours sitting at a desk or driving. When we sit for extended periods, the muscles that support the spine become tight and weak, placing extra strain on the spinal joints and discs. Over time, this can lead to stiffness, aching and sharp pain.

Another common cause is muscular strain

often from lifting something awkwardly, sudden twisting movements or overdoing it at the gym. These injuries can cause protective muscle spasm, which restricts movement and creates a cycle of pain and stiffness.

Disc-related problems, such as disc bulges or herniations, can also cause back pain. These occur when the soft cushions between the vertebrae become damaged, sometimes pressing on nearby nerves and causing pain that radiates into the buttocks or legs (sciatica). While disc problems sound alarming, they often respond well to conservative treatment.

Osteopathic treatment takes a whole-body approach to back pain. Rather than just focusing on the painful area, we assess how your entire body is moving and identify the underlying factors contributing to your symptoms. Treatment typically includes soft tissue work to release tight muscles, gentle joint mobilisation to restore movement, and specific exercises to build strength and prevent recurrence.
