Lower Back Pain Treatment in Cheadle Hulme

Hands-on osteopathic care for back pain and sciatica, with Wes Tubb M.Ost

Lower back pain can affect everything: sitting at your desk, driving, sleeping or getting round the golf course. At Oak Health Osteopathy, a private clinic in Cheadle Hulme, registered osteopath Wes Tubb M.Ost works out what is driving your pain, explains it clearly and builds a treatment plan around the things you want to get back to.

The good news is that most back pain is mechanical. It comes from the way your muscles, joints and ligaments work together, not from a serious underlying condition.

    What causes lower back pain?

These are the causes we see most often:

    • Posture and prolonged sitting. Long hours at a desk or in the car can leave the muscles that support your spine tight and weak, putting extra load on the spinal joints and discs.
    • Muscular strain. Lifting awkwardly, a sudden twist or overdoing it at the gym can trigger protective muscle spasm and a cycle of pain and stiffness.
    • Disc-related problems. A disc bulge can irritate a nearby nerve, causing pain into the buttock or leg (sciatica). Disc problems often respond well to conservative, non-surgical care.
    • Recurring flare-ups. If your back "goes" every few months, there is usually an underlying reason, such as joint stiffness, weakness or the way you move.
    • Sport and golf. The repeated rotation of the golf swing places particular stress on the lower back. See our Golf Injury Clinic.

How osteopathy can help with lower back pain

Osteopathy takes a whole-body approach. Wes assesses how your hips, pelvis and spine move together, because restriction in one area can strain another. Treatment is tailored to you and may include:

    • soft tissue massage to ease muscle tension
    • joint mobilisation, stretching and, where appropriate, gentle manipulation
    • exercises to build strength and help reduce recurrence
    • advice on posture, desk set-up and lifting

Read more about our approach on the Osteopathy page.

    Your first appointment

    1. Case history. Your symptoms, medical background, lifestyle and goals.
    2. Assessment. Wes will observe how you move, check your posture and test the mobility of your joints and muscles, explaining as he goes and always asking for your consent.
    3. Diagnosis and plan. He will explain what he thinks is going on and agree a plan with you. If you need to see your GP or have further investigation, he will tell you.
    4. Treatment and advice. Most first appointments include treatment, plus exercises to support you between sessions.

Your first appointment lasts 45 minutes and follow-ups last 30 minutes. Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

How many sessions will I need?

Looking after your back at home

In line with NHS advice, these simple steps can help:

    • Keep moving. Gentle activity such as walking usually helps more than bed rest.
    • Break up sitting. Get up and move every 30–45 minutes if you work at a desk.
    • Try heat. A warm bath or a heat pack can ease muscle tension.
    • Ask a pharmacist about suitable pain relief if you need it.
    • Build back up gradually to exercise and sport.

When to seek urgent medical help

Most back pain is not serious, but, following NHS guidance, some symptoms need medical attention straight away.

Call 999 or go to A&E if you have back pain with:

    • numbness or tingling around your genitals or bottom
    • difficulty peeing, or loss of control of your bladder or bowels
    • numbness, tingling or weakness in both legs, or a leg that suddenly feels unsteady
    • chest pain
    • back pain after a serious accident, such as a car crash or a bad fall

Contact your GP urgently or call NHS 111 if you have back pain with:

    • a high temperature, or you feel hot and shivery
    • unexplained weight loss
    • a swelling or a change in the shape of your back
    • pain that does not improve after rest or is worse at night
    • a history of cancer

If you are unsure, contact NHS 111 before booking.
